Pacific Design Incorporated selects ACE Associated Compiler Experts' CoSy® compiler development system for semi-custom processor

Instruction set flexibility and code density critical to VUPU compiler

ACE Associated Compiler Experts today announced that Pacific Design Inc. (PDI, Tokyo, Japan,, has chosen ACE's CoSy compiler development system to develop C compilers for its semi-custom processor.

PDI's VUPU processor consists of a general purpose processing unit (PU) and user definable variable data path units (VU). A user can attach special purpose application instruction sets, as VU instruction, to the general purpose instruction sets of PU.

Compilers for the VUPU processor must accomplish two tasks. First, they must be flexible to accommodate the user-defined instruction sets. Second, they must reach extremely high code density to stay within silicon targets. PDI selected CoSy because of its excellent flexible and optimization capabilities and its short learning curve. These enabled PDI to quickly generate compilers while maintaining exceptional product quality within short development times.

"With CoSy, we were able to produce customizable compilers that were built directly into the VUPU development environment. The VUPU processor is aimed at the real time market because of its need for dedicated data processing. For example, W-CDMA, ATM, STM, Network-Layer3, MPEG-Channel-Filter are all potential implementations. In addition, applications in this market segment tend to lend themselves to the concurrent and multiple embedded VUPU processing style.
