NEC purchases CoSy® compiler development platform license to generate C compilers for DSP cores

ACE’s DSP-C critical for short development cycles in high-end consumer electronics applications ACE Associated Compiler Experts bv (Amsterdam, The Netherlands) today announced the licensing of its CoSy Compiler Development Platform to NEC Corporation of Tokyo, Japan. NEC will use CoSy's advanced compiler development environment to generate high-performance C compilers for the NEC µPD7701x and µPD7711x families of 16-bit DSP processor cores and for its next-generation DSP products.

A significant factor in NEC's decision to adopt CoSy as a compiler development tool for the long-term was the pioneering commitment that ACE has shown to DSP-oriented compiler development. In September '98 ACE released a version of CoSy specifically optimised for the production of C compilers for DSP processors. At the same time ACE developed DSP-specific extensions to the C programming language to handle the fixed-point data types, divided memory spaces, dedicated register sets and circular buffers commonly used by DSPs. These language extensions have now been submitted to the ISO/IEC Joint Technical Committee for inclusion in the next official release of the ISO/ANSI C programming language. ACE is also co-ordinating the activities of a consortium of industrial users and academic institutions to further develop 'DSP-C'.

NEC Corporation is highly active in the DSP market, particularly in the area of high-speed low-power embedded DSP cores for applications in consumer electronics and mobile telecommunications. Its latest µPD77110 16-bit DSP core, for example, which features 238 Kbytes of on-chip instruction and data RAM and a power consumption of only 0.5 mA/MHz. It allows cellular telephones to use the latest PSI CELP voice coding at a power dissipation of only 35 mW from a 2.5 V supply. However, for these and future high-end applications, where short development cycles are essential, NEC realises that easy development of DSP programs, written in high level languages such as C, will be critical to success.
