ACE announces CoSy® support for Windows™ compiler development

ACE Associated Compiler Experts (Amsterdam, The Netherlands) today announced a new release of its CoSy® compiler development platform that supports the generation of Windows NT based compilers, allowing compiler developers to take advantage of CoSy®'s superior code generation features and to port their compilers easily across versions of the Windows operating system. With the increasing use of PC based systems for software development, particularly in the area of embedded system programming, there is a very real need for highly efficient optimising compilers that run under Windows.

"In the embedded system marketplace it is quite common to find small teams of programmers developing software on PC based systems running Windows," said Marco Roodzant, VP Marketing and Sales at ACE, "and as a result more and more compiler companies are scheduling Windows compilers into their product portfolios. This new version of CoSy® enables the use of standard Microsoft Visual C++ compilers to generate efficient CoSy® compilers for Win32 platforms."

In addition to today's introduction of Windows as a target platform for CoSy® based compilers, CoSy® already supports compiler development for Sun Solaris, HP-UX and Linux machines. Its language support includes C, DSP-C, Java and Fortran, while its rich set of optimisers and code generators, and its highly flexible architecture description language allow developers to produce high performance compilers for a wide range of target processors. CoSy® is particularly good at generating compilers for highly parallel architectures such as VLIW processors and DSPs, where its interacting (as opposed to the more traditional sequential pass) optimisers provide optimal solutions to problems such as issue slot allocation, phase ordering and code reduction.

Beta-test versions of the new CoSy® release have already been used successfully by Atair Software GmbH (a company that specialises in producing software development tools for DSP processors) to generate production quality Windows compilers.

"Using CoSy®, we have already been able to produce a highly optimised compiler for a very successful DSP processor in a very short period of time," said Franz Krieger, Atair's managing director. "Having thoroughly tested early releases of the Windows NT version, we are now in a position to generate CoSy® compilers for the various operating systems automatically from within a single unified development environment."
